COVID-19 Vaccination Clinic Planned for all SON Members

The Nawash Health Centre, in collaboration with the Grey Bruce Public Health Unit, is holding a COVID-19 vaccination clinic for all SON members, to be held on Thursday, March 25. The clinic will be by appointment ONLY. Drop-ins will not be allowed.

The clinic will be held at the Bayshore Community Centre in Owen Sound, and open to all members of the Saugeen Ojibway Nation, their spouses, and children 16 years and older, regardless of their place of residence. The Saugeen Ojibway Nation is the combined members of the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation and the Chippewas of Saugeen First Nation. The clinics will also be open to any First Nations person in the Grey Bruce area, their spouses, and children 16 years and older.

Wide-spread vaccination against the COVID-19 virus is the least painful path out of the current pandemic. We cannot risk the health and lives of our relations and loved ones by letting the virus simply run its course through the community. Vaccination is also the fastest way to safely reach a point where we can begin relaxing the necessary safety protocols that have impacted our lives so heavily. With those goals in mind, we will continue to do everything we can to get the effective, life-saving COVID-19 vaccines to as many of our people as possible.

The Nawash Health Centre is holding a COVID-19 vaccination clinic Wednesday, March 17, from 9:30 AM – 2:00 PM at the Kikendaasogamig Elementary School, by appointment ONLY. This clinic is open to all Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation Members in the Grey Bruce area, who are 16 years or older. Our community COVID-19 vaccination is proceeding well. Our goal is to fully vaccinate 75%-80% of the adults in Neyaashiinigmiing, to achieve herd immunity. We are well on our way towards that goal. In the coming weeks, residents who have already received a first dose will begin receiving their second and final dose of the Pfizer vaccine, with the full measure of immunity developing about 10-14 days later. We still have many people left to vaccinate, however.

All of the Council and most of our staff have now received at least a first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. Our vaccine program is of critical importance because it is our only practical way out of the pandemic. Suggestions that we allow the virus to sweep through the community to build immunity are simply not acceptable. COVID-19 is a serious and often fatal illness. We must be vaccinated, and as quickly as possible.

It is also a poor idea to delay being vaccinated on the theory that if our neighbours take the vaccine then we don’t have to. An unvaccinated person is still at risk of catching and transmitting the virus to every unvaccinated person around them, including their family members, friends, children, and those who are immuno-compromised. For the sake of all our relations, please get your vaccination as soon as possible.

Still Need Your Shot?

Our first two vaccination clinics were held at the Maadookii Seniors Centre and catered to the elderly and vulnerable living in the Seniors Apartment Complex and around the reserve. 73 residents were given the first dose of the two-dose Moderna vaccine.  On Wednesday, March 10, we will reach a significant milestone in our battle against COVID-19, when these first vaccine recipients receive their second dose of the Moderna vaccine. While it will take 2-3 weeks for their COVID-19 immunity to fully develop, we will have our first group of fully vaccinated residents! If you received your first COVID-19 vaccination at the Maadookii Seniors Centre, please contact the Health Centre to ensure you are scheduled for your second dose at the March 10 clinic.

The Nawash Health Centre is holding a third large vaccination clinic on Wednesday, March 17 to provide residents and staff with a first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. The planned clinic will administer the first dose of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, which requires two doses to reach maximum effectiveness. After the first dose is given, the vaccinated person must wait a minimum of 4 weeks before receiving the second shot. Any Neyaashiinigmiing residents or staff, who are at least 16 years old, and have not yet received a first dose of any COVID-19 vaccine, should contact the Health Centre immediately to schedule their shots at the March 17  clinic.

Neyaashiinigmiing Continues COVID-19 Vaccination Program

The Nawash Health Centre conducted a second large vaccination clinic March 3. 132 residents and staff received the first dose of the 2-dose Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, bringing the total of first dose vaccinations in the community to 355. We are fast approaching our goal of vaccinating a minimum of 75-80% of adults in the community to achieve community “herd immunity” to the COVID-19 virus.

Our first two clinics gave 73 older and vulnerable residents the first dose of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. On March 10, the Nawash Health Centre will be holding a vaccination clinic at the Maadookii Seniors Centre to administer the second dose of the Moderna vaccine to those 73 first recipients. To avoid crowding and line-ups, this second shot will also be by appointment only. If you received your first shot of the Moderna vaccine at the Maadookii Seniors Centre, please call the Nawash Health Centre at 519-534-0373 to schedule your second shot. Owing to limited vaccine supply, we can’t be certain when we will have doses of the Moderna vaccine on hand again, so it is important that everybody who received their first dose also receive their second dose at the March 10 clinic.

We are pleased by the success of our vaccination program thus far and we are committed to ensuring that every adult that wants a vaccine is able to get one soon. After the Moderna second doses have been administered, we will hold clinics for the following demographics:

  • off-reserve members: a first-dose clinic to be held in Owen Sound.
  • on-reserve members: an evening first-dose clinic for those adults not able to make previous vaccination clinics
  • on-reserve members: a second-dose clinic for those who have received a first dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine

Boundary Road Monitoring Station to Reopen

The Monitoring Station, controlling traffic into Neyaashiinigmiing through the Coveney’s Road entrance, will reopen on Thursday, March 4, 2021, at 6:00 AM.

The monitoring station is a key part of our strategy to keep our home community COVID-19 free until community members have been safely vaccinated. Vehicles entering the community must give the monitors their reason for entering. Entrance is permitted for:

  • Residents and members
  • Essential employees
  • Emergency Response personnel
  • Essential inspection, maintenance and repair persons
  • Canada Post employees and other carriers
  • Hydro One, Bell Canada and GB Tel service people
  • Fuel suppliers
  • Anyone with written permission of Council

We are concerned that some drivers are not stopping at the monitoring station when entering Neyaashiinigmiing, and instead speeding by the monitors or merely slowing down to wave. This is terribly dangerous for the monitors, who work alongside the road performing an essential service for the community. The stop sign in front of the Monitoring Station is a legal stop under the Highway Traffic Act. Note that failure to stop is a traffic offense that could result in significant fines, or points being removed from the driver’s license. Residents are reminded that ALL vehicles entering the community are required to come to a full stop at the stop sign before proceeding.

The next Neyaashiinigmiing COVID-19 vaccination clinic will be held Wednesday, March 3, from 9:30 AM to 2:30 PM. First doses of the Pfizer vaccine will be given in the gymnasium of Kikendaasogamig Elementary School, by appointment only.

If you are 16 years old or older, are a resident or staff member of Neyaashiinigmiing, and haven’t received a first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, please call the Nawash Health Centre today to schedule a vaccination appointment.

The goal of our vaccination program is to immunize 75% of the adult population of the community. At 75%-80% immunization, we will achieve what is called “herd immunity”, when enough people are immune to avoid a dangerous outbreak spreading through the community. Herd immunity is the first step towards reclaiming our normal lives back from the pandemic. Herd immunity will not only protect those who are vaccinated, but also those that can’t get a vaccine for other health reasons. For your safety, for the community’s safety, for those who are vulnerable, schedule your vaccination today.

State of Emergency Extended in Neyaashiinigmiing

The Council has accepted the recommendation of the Community Emergency Response Group and extended the State of Emergency in Neyaashiinigmiing until March 31, 2021.

The Grey Bruce Public Health Unit has announced that, as of Monday, March 1, 2021, Grey Bruce will be moving to the Green status of the provincial colour-coded COVID-19 Response Framework. You can see how the new colour-code is most likely to impact residents of Neyaashiinigmiing on our summary.

We are pleased that sound fact-based policy, determined action and public diligence have lessened the impact of COVID-19 on Grey Bruce, but note that the pandemic is ongoing. Members and residents are reminded that we must continue to follow pandemic safety protocols.
