Spring Driving Tips

Driving Safety

With the early signs of Spring weather approaching and drier road conditions, there is a tendency for driving speeds to increase within the community. The warmer weather also brings an increase of pedestrians of all ages on our roadways, including children and elders using slow moving mobility scooters.

It is especially important to reduce speeds in poor road and lighting conditions. Be mindful of pedestrians walking along the roadway, who can be difficult to see. Cyclist and pedestrians are encouraged to have portable lights and wear bright clothing or reflective markings after dark.

The absence of sidewalks in the community presents an increased safety risk. Be alert and drive responsibly for the safety of yourself and others.

Speeding. What’s It Worth To You?

Even modest speed decreases can significantly reduce your risk of a collision or loss of control.  It is estimated that the required stopping distance at 50 km/hr can be 12-14 metres shorter than at 60 km/hr. Your stopping distance increases with higher speeds as well as poor road conditions such as snow, rain or even gravel. Speeding also hits your pocketbook. It increases your fuel consumption, brake and tire wear as well as other mechanical components of your vehicle.

The Highway Traffic Act of Ontario governs the rules of the road, including speeding, and it is enforceable within Neyaashiinigmiing. Our police officers will be conducting increased radar enforcement within the community in an effort to reduce speeding and increase the safety of our roadways. A speeding ticket fine for going 20 km/h over the speed limit is $95.00, plus three demerit points and an increase in your auto insurance rate.

Other Penalties You May Not Know

  • Speeding tickets have penalties that can last for 3 years or more.
  • Insurance rates – Each conviction increases insurance rates!
    • 1st speeding conviction: 10% increase
    • 2nd speeding conviction: 25% increase
    • 3rd speeding conviction: 100% increase
  • Demerit points
    • Speeding tickets over 15 km/hr have demerit points
    • Accumulating demerits causes licence suspensions
  • Employment
    • Many employers have restrictions for convictions and driving records
  • Suspensions
    • For novice drivers (G1 and G2 Drivers), any ticket for 30 km/hr or more over the limit has a 30 day licence suspension

Stunt Driving

Section 172 of the Highway Traffic Act sets out the offences of Stunt Driving/Racing. Offences under this section include any operation of a vehicle 50 km/hr or more above the speed limit. This offence carries serious immediate penalties, including an immediate 7-day driver’s licence suspension and 7-day vehicle impoundment at the owners/drivers expense. If convicted, you may face a fine of $2000 to $10,000, including any additional term of licence suspension.

Let’s all make an effort to be respectful and courteous of everyone using the roadways. Responsible driving starts with you. Slow down and be safe.

Still Need Your Shot?

Our first two vaccination clinics were held at the Maadookii Seniors Centre and catered to the elderly and vulnerable living in the Seniors Apartment Complex and around the reserve. 73 residents were given the first dose of the two-dose Moderna vaccine.  On Wednesday, March 10, we will reach a significant milestone in our battle against COVID-19, when these first vaccine recipients receive their second dose of the Moderna vaccine. While it will take 2-3 weeks for their COVID-19 immunity to fully develop, we will have our first group of fully vaccinated residents! If you received your first COVID-19 vaccination at the Maadookii Seniors Centre, please contact the Health Centre to ensure you are scheduled for your second dose at the March 10 clinic.

The Nawash Health Centre is holding a third large vaccination clinic on Wednesday, March 17 to provide residents and staff with a first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. The planned clinic will administer the first dose of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, which requires two doses to reach maximum effectiveness. After the first dose is given, the vaccinated person must wait a minimum of 4 weeks before receiving the second shot. Any Neyaashiinigmiing residents or staff, who are at least 16 years old, and have not yet received a first dose of any COVID-19 vaccine, should contact the Health Centre immediately to schedule their shots at the March 17  clinic.

Call the Nawash Health Centre at 519-534-0373 for the following clinics:

Priority Group: Residents who received the Moderna first dose at the Maadookii Seniors Centre
Date: Wednesday, March 10, 2021
Time: 9:30 AM – 2:30 PM
Location: Maadookii Seniors Centre

Priority Group: All residents over 16 years of age who have not received a first dose
Date: Wednesday, March 17, 2021
Time: 9:30 AM – 2:30 PM
Location: Kikendaasogamig Elementary School gymnasium

In the weeks following the March 17 first-dose clinic, we will begin scheduling second-dose clinics. More information will be announced as soon as it is available.

We are pleased with our vaccination progress and urge all residents to get vaccinated as soon as possible. Whether vaccinated or not, all community members are asked to continue to observe pandemic protocols until further notice.

  • Wear a mask outside your home.
  • Wash your hands frequently.
  • Watch your distance and stay 2 meters away from people you don’t live with.

Neyaashiinigmiing Continues COVID-19 Vaccination Program

The Nawash Health Centre conducted a second large vaccination clinic March 3. 132 residents and staff received the first dose of the 2-dose Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, bringing the total of first dose vaccinations in the community to 355. We are fast approaching our goal of vaccinating a minimum of 75-80% of adults in the community to achieve community “herd immunity” to the COVID-19 virus.

Our first two clinics gave 73 older and vulnerable residents the first dose of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. On March 10, the Nawash Health Centre will be holding a vaccination clinic at the Maadookii Seniors Centre to administer the second dose of the Moderna vaccine to those 73 first recipients. To avoid crowding and line-ups, this second shot will also be by appointment only. If you received your first shot of the Moderna vaccine at the Maadookii Seniors Centre, please call the Nawash Health Centre at 519-534-0373 to schedule your second shot. Owing to limited vaccine supply, we can’t be certain when we will have doses of the Moderna vaccine on hand again, so it is important that everybody who received their first dose also receive their second dose at the March 10 clinic.

We are pleased by the success of our vaccination program thus far and we are committed to ensuring that every adult that wants a vaccine is able to get one soon. After the Moderna second doses have been administered, we will hold clinics for the following demographics:

  • off-reserve members: a first-dose clinic to be held in Owen Sound.
  • on-reserve members: an evening first-dose clinic for those adults not able to make previous vaccination clinics
  • on-reserve members: a second-dose clinic for those who have received a first dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine

We will update the public as soon as the dates, times and locations for future clinics have been finalized. We thank you for your patience.

Whether vaccinated or not, all community members are asked to continue to observe pandemic protocols until further notice.

  • Wear a mask outside your home.
  • Wash your hands frequently.
  • Watch your distance and stay 2 meters away from people you don’t live with.
