Mission Statement:

The Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation Board of Education's authority and mission comes form the reality of tribal sovereignty and self-determination.  We shall encourage our community to participate in the learning environment of every student.  We strive for the highest quality of education which will be determined by the needs of the community.  Our commitment to provide a culturally-based / community - based education is on:

  • Our traditional values, respect, humility, unity, dignity, harmony, sharing and caring manner.
  • Our history as Anishnabek, other First Nations' histories to the arrival of the Europeans.
  • Earth Sciences.
  • Communication and Language Arts in Anishinaabemowin and the English grammar.
  • Social Studies to include: Band Sovereignty, Citizenship - family tree. Our leadership and other forms of government and political strutures.
  • Arts - dancing, crafts, music, theatre, industrial arts.
  • Mathematics and Sciences.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Health & Physical education to meet the spiritual, mental, physical, emotional well-being of each child.
  • Literature.
  • Promotion of life skills and leadership skills.

Historical Overview:

The Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation Board of Education held their first Board of Election on December 15, 1993 when the local Council relinquished their educational governance to the Local School Board.  This agreement, namely the "Memorandum of Understanding" is officially updated and renewed each election term as it outlines and clarifies roles and responsibilities of each party.

The Cape Croker Frist Nation Elementary School is located near McGregors' Harbour and consists of a main building and three portables.  The Cape Croker First Nation Elementary School offers Ojibway language classes; various mainstream special education programs andtakes measures to incorporate cultural education into their school.

Nawash Post Secondary Program: 

I/Post Secondary Coordinator - Debra Chegahno.

Program Objective: To provide limited financial assistance, subject to the availability of funding, to eligible and committed Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation band members in pursuit of higher eduacation at the post secondary level. To assist post secondary students with the tools and resources necessary to graduate with the qualifications and skills. To obtain a post secondary degree, diploma or apprenticeship program approved by MTCU. To Improve the employability of the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation band members by providing eligible students with access to education and skills development opportunities at the post secondary level. This is expected to lead to greater participation of students in the post secondary studies, higher Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation graduation rates from post secondary programs, and higher employment rates upon graduation.  It is expected that the students funded by this program will have post secondary educational outcomes comparable to other Canadians with similar educational backgrounds.  Ensure that a maximum number of Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation band members are approved for assistance under the Nawash Post Seconday Program criteria.  THe Nawash Post Secondary Program is not a full funding program.  Students who have eduational costs that are higher than the maximum allowances under the Nawash program are encouraged to seek and secure supplementary financial assistance.  Students will be required to identify all of the sources that will be used to cover their educational costs.

Secondary Student Services Program:

Education Counsellor: Karen Millette on leave.

Advocacy, referrals and financial assistance are provided to the students by the Education Counsellor through out the school year.  Financial services assist the students with meal allowance, atheletic fees, equipment and transportation costs.  Support services are set up for student that have made a request to the counsellor for professional assistance.  Students are encouraged to  attend all of their courses and are given an allowance based on their grades and attendance at the end of the school year.  The Eduation Counsellor is employed by the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation Board of Education, accomodation and outreach is achieve by scheduled dates to attend St. Mary's in Owen Sound and P.S.D.S.  in Wiarton to support secondary students and encourage them to work towards obtaining their Ontario Secondary School Diploma.
